The Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG-CRG) is one of the largest Genome Sequencing Centres in Europe. CNAG-CRG researchers participate in major International Genomic Initiatives such as the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), the International Human Epigenome Consortium (IHEC), the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC) and the European Infrastructure for life-science information (ELIXIR), as well as in several EU-funded projects.

It is integrated with the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. The CRG is composed by an interdisciplinary, motivated and creative scientific team which is supported both by a flexible and efficient administration and by high-end and innovative technologies.

In April 2021, the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) received the renewal of the 'HR Excellence in Research' logo from the European Commission. This is a recognition of the Institute's commitment to developing an HR Strategy for Researchers, designed to bring the practices and procedures in line with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter and Code).

The Role

During 2022 CNAG will become an independent institution and will set up as a new legal entity. 

We are looking for an experienced, proactive and motivated Head of Finance that helps to ensure smooth operation of the centre. This role has impact on purpose at two levels:

  • At the Strategic level:
  • Defining the financial strategy, policies and procedures.
  • Building a Team that may be created and developed.
  • Ensuring the management control and the balanced scoreboard.
  • Investment plan, Cash Flow and Working Capital management.

 

  • At the Operational level: 
  • To be steward of the organizational assets, focused on risk management, accounting practices, and asset preservation. 
  • To ensure an effective and efficient finance operations (procurement, receivables, payables, treasury, etc). 
  • To support Direction by providing financial perspective to shape decisions. 
  • To drive improvement initiatives such as cost reduction, procurement, pricing, administration, facility management and other process improvements and innovations that add value to the Centre.  

 

About the Team

The mission of the Finance Department aims to provide effective planning, management and control of the CNAG’s financial resources.

The Finance Department provides timely, accurate and reliable financial information and administers responsive procurement services to researchers, while ensuring compliance with regulations and protecting assets.

Whom would we like to hire? 

Professional experience

Reporting to the Administrative Director, your main duties and responsibilities will be the following: 

  • - Direct oversight of Accounting, Procurement and Controlling-Post Award areas. Assess financial and economic Centre’s internal and external position and propose measures to hedge external threads and seize opportunities. Monitor projected cash balances and arrange for either additional financing or investment options. Approve PO’s in second review. Ensures the end users receive best value for money and excellent procurement and financial services
  • - Presentation of financial data to various internal and external recipients
  • - Oversight finance activities, financial and tax compliance, audits and risk management. Propose and implement measures to correct deviations, fix incidences and mitigate risks
  • - Creation, development, implementation, and monitoring of policies, processes, procedures, tools and systems. Promote training and knowledge on procedures, best practices, new regulations, and new skills acquisition throughout the Department
  • - Formulation of the financial strategic direction of the Centre and tactical plans, budgeting systems and performance metrics, in agreement with the general strategic plans and Centre’s direction. Support decision making by providing financial analysis

 

Must have

  • - 5 years of previous experience as Head of Finance or similar responsibilities
  •  

Desirable but not required/ Nice to have

  • - Experience in research Institutions, Universities or Biomedical sector
  • - MBA, Master in Financial Management or equivalent

 

Education and training

  • - Degree in Business Administration or equivalent

 

Languages 

  • - High level of English, Spanish and Catalan, spoken and written

 

Technical skills

  • - Deep knowledge of external and internal regulations (Accounting, Grants, Tax, Legal, Procurement, etc.). 
  • - ERP and Business Intelligence tools experience.
  • - MS Office (Excel, Power Point and Word mainly)

Contract duration: Permanent

Estimated annual gross salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales
